How does SMS central heating work?

The unit is a wireless GSM remote control switch that connects to the GSM cell phone network. It is activated by calling its cell phone number, it will reject the call without answering and switch on the device connected to it.

Can I purchase and install the unit myself?

Yes and no. You can purchase the unit, but it will need to be installed by a qualified electrician. We are able to supply a list of electricians who we partner with that you can contact.

How many different phones can control the central heating?

There is a limit of 99 different phone numbers that you can link up to your central heating control unit.

How do I know that the heating is definitely on? What if more than one person tries to turn it on - does that turn it off?

To turn the heating on, you simply call the unit’s phone number and the heating will turn on. If someone else calls it, the unit will obey the last command it receives.

How much does it cost to call the device?

There are no call charges incurred when calling the unit, it will recognise an authorised telephone number calling and reject the call without answering. A text message will be charged at your normal rate.

How long will the central heating stay on after calling it?

The length of time will be determined by yourself. We will configure the unit according to your instructions. It can be anything from 1 minute to 18 hours.

Can someone else accidently turn my heating on?

The unit is password protected allowing only the numbers supplied by you and programmed into the unit to activate it.

Will it work with my time clock?

The SMS unit will work independently of your time clock and will allow you to continue using your time clock for standard operations. So, if the time clock is OFF, the SMS unit can turn the heating ON, however if the time clock is ON, the SMS unit will not switch the heating OFF.

Will it operate both my hot water and my radiators?

Yes, it will. There are two circuits, one for your hot water and one for your radiators. The unit can be configured to turn on your hot water independently of your radiators.

Do I need anything else?

All you will need is a Pay As You Go SIM card that will be fitted to the unit. This is how your mobile phone communicates with the heating control. It normally costs about £1, but we can help you do this.

How much does it cost?

The unit on its own costs £199 + P&P. Fitted and configured by our qualified electricians will cost from £60 depending on location. However, you can arrange for your own electrician to fit it if you wish. Because you can control when the heating is ON and OFF, you can avoid paying for fuel when you don’t need it. We’ll leave the cost savings up to you to work out, but it will certainly pay for itself over a short period of time... and help the environment.
